The PFM was introduced by Sheaffer in 1959, the wide bodied pen was the first model to be fitted with the now iconic inlaid nib unit, and incorporated the already successful snorkel filling system.

The Pen For Men range was made up of five main models listed below, five colour choices were available Black, Burgundy, Blue, Green and Grey in all modes.

PFM I - Plastic Cap and Barrel, Polished Stainless Steel Trim and Cap with no white dot, Fitted with a Palladium Silver Inlaid Nib Unit.

PFM II - Plastic Barrel, Frosted Stainless Steel Cap with a Polished Stainless Clip with a white dot and a 3/16" polished area, Fitted with a Palladium Silver Inlaid Nib Unit.

PFM III - Plastic Cap and Barrel, Gold Filled Clip with a white dot and a 3/8" Band, Fitted with a 14K Gold Inlaid Nib Unit.

PFM IV - Plastic Barrel with Gold Filled end on the Blind Cap, Polished Stainless Steel Cap with Gold Filled Clip with White Dot and a 3/16" band, Fitted with a 14K Gold Inlaid Nib Unit.

PFM V - Plastic Barrel with Gold Filled end on the Blind Cap, Gold Filled Chased Cap and Clip with a White Dot, Fitted with a 14K Gold Inlaid Nib Unit.

An Autograph model was also available in all five colours, black was a stock item while the other 4 colours were available by order only. The Autograph model is a PFM III that's fitted with a 14K solid gold cap band which is suitable for engraving, a concept that had been employed by Sheaffer for many years previously.

The Demonstrator PFM was supplied to Sheaffer representatives and authorised retail outlets to demonstrate the unique filling system to their customers. these pens were not made available for sale in retail outlets. There is two versions of the demonstrator pen, one fitted with a black inlaid nib unit and the other with a transparent nib unit, both have 14K gold nibs. They are basically a transparent version of the PFM III.

Two Masterpiece models are known to exist, both are made in 9ct solid gold, one is finished with a fine barleycorn finish, while the other is polished. The polished version as U.K hallmarks and was reportedly commissioned by Sheaffer UK and 1oo pens were made by S.J.Rose, who's makers mark is stamped on the pen.

The PFM was struggling to get a foothold in a changing market place during the early 1960's, with competition from ballpoints beginning to slow down fountain pen sales in general, and combined with the introduction of cartridge pens and trends still leaning towards slender pens, the writing was on the wall for Sheaffer's flagship model. The PFM range was being reduced down in size, by 1964 the III and V pens were the only models still being made, and in 1968 Sheaffer stop production of the PFM.
